The Best Plus Size Tops For Tummy Coverage

The Best Plus Size Tops For Tummy Coverage

When I talk about “tummy coverage” I don’t mean just any non-crop top. (I’m glad that plus size crop tops are available for anyone who wants them, but like any trend they’ve been embraced by some retailers to the exclusion of other styles which can be a hassle.)

What I mean here is tops that don’t cling to your tummy, showing off every curve and bump. I have a pet peeve about shirts that let me see if the wearer has an innie or outie belly button. It’s a sign that either the top is too small or the fabric is cheap and flimsy. Or both.

Let’s Talk About That Tummy

Maybe you're naturally apple shaped, meaning that your body stores fat in the tummy area. You don’t have to be plus size to be apple shaped - relatively slender celebrities like Liz Hurley and Drew Barrymore are apple shaped.

But there are other reasons why your tummy may be an issue when you’re selecting clothes. Pregnancy is one, and being lucky enough to live past the age of 40 is another. The human body really likes to build up our middles.

You wouldn’t wear something that cuts across your hips or bust. A seam in those places would make your clothes bunch and pull. We need to treat our tummies the same way. Dresses without a defined waist are great for this, but that doesn’t mean you have to give up separates. There are plenty of tops that give your tummy the room to breathe and move.

Roomy tunics aren’t our only option for tummy coverage but they are one of my favorites. They go well with closer fitting pants like Slim Leg Pants and Pull On Pants. We have several colors in light-as-air jersey knit fabric. That’s what sets them apart from similar tops you’ve seen elsewhere. Our signature jersey knit doesn’t wrinkle or pill, so these tops always look polished and put together.

And did I mention the pockets?

This style has a similar effect to the 2 Pocket Swing Tunic, with the addition of more drapey volume and a lower neckline. The handkerchief hem really leans into the elegant movement that jersey knit has.

What makes this top different from every other long sleeve tee you’ve seen? It’s the cut as well as the fabric. Whether it’s in jersey or our classic slinky, it’s made to skim over your tummy rather than cling to it. Don’t be shy about ordering it in several colors - the tee is a classic wardrobe staple for a reason.

This tunic looks a lot like a top. What makes it a tunic is the additional 2 inches of length. It’ll keep your tummy covered even when you’re reaching for something on the top shelf.

This is the sleeveless shell for those of us concerned about our tummies. That extra length keeps our middles covered while giving us the look of a regular length top.

Love Your Tummy

I know body acceptance and confidence isn’t easy for any of us. But your tummy is what it is. Dress to accommodate your tummy, but don’t smother it in oversized tops that’ll only look sloppy.

Imagine your ancestors from a few hundred years ago - if they could see you now, they’d be delighted that you clearly have enough to eat and enough health to live so long.
