What Is A Day To Night Dress?
Excellent question. I’m so glad I asked it. Because one of the things that makes Day to Night dresses so frustrating to find is that we’re not always clear on what that means. (Neither is the fashion industry as a whole, so this one isn’t on you.) The ideal Day to Night dress is something you can wear to the office and then for a night out on the town.
No dress can be both adequately professional and sufficiently dressy on its own. But a dress that’s versatile and classic can serve as the basis of both those outfits.
How To Build You Day To Night Outfits
You’re going to start with your dress. Think of the proverbial Little Black Dress. Vikki Vi’s Maxi Tank Dress, Jewel Neckline Maxi Dress, 3/4 Sleeve A-Line Dress, T Shirt Style Dress, and V Neck Pocket Dress all fit the bill.
And you don’t have to stick with basic black. Any solid color will do. Often when we bring in a new solid color, we’ll also have some pieces in matching prints or complimentary shades.
Your Day Outfit
Think about how you’ll wear your versatile dress during the day. Adding a Blazer, Kimono Jacket, Swing Jacket, Tab Collar Jacket, or 3/4 Sleeve Cardigan can instantly make your dress office appropriate. A matching or contrasting solid color, or a subtle print will work wonderfully. Add work-friendly shoes and jewelry and you’re good to go.
Your Night Outfit
Now let’s build an evening outfit around that same dress, just as if you were going out straight from home instead of from work. You may decide to wear the dress on its own without a top layer. Or you can add a Kimono Duster, or Sheer Topper. You could also go with a Kimono Jacket, etc. in a bold print or a matching or contrasting solid.
What distinguishes a night outfit from a day outfit is the sparkle. I don’t mean literal sparkle necessarily (though I’m definitely pro-sparkle). I’m thinking of razzle dazzle. Your usual style will determine how razzly your dazzle will be. Maximalists like myself will reach for bold costume jewelry while minimalists will want to go with the real stuff.
Making the Switch
If you’re traveling by car, then you can easily bring your evening pieces into the office and then toss your day accessories in the trunk.
